With the news of the Montreal Canadiens hosting the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, NHL fans have taken to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the decision.
When it comes to Hockey Twitter, reactions to news are going to come in three forms. The latest triggering thing to take social media by storm was the NHL’s decision to have the Montreal Canadiens host the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and reactions were either positive, negative or both.
The reason for the positivity is easy. The Habs are getting a major event that is a special milestone for many players and families in the world. What makes this draft all the more important is the fact that future NHL superstar and hometown kid Alexis Lafrenière is projected to be the first to get his named called up at the podium.
Lafrenière has been destroying the QMJHL playing for Rimouski Océanic wearing an ‘A’ as a 17-year-old. He already has 185 points in 121 games over the course of two seasons, and he is showing no signs of slowing down for the 2019-20 campaign.
Montreal Canadiens fans quickly made that connection in their initial reaction to the news as well as our very own contributors at A Winning Habit:
"Too bad the Habs will be picking 31st when the draft is in town (Sebastian)My “Habs should purposely tank so they can draft Lafreniere at home” piece will be up in 5… (Ken)"
Positive
WE’RE GETTING THE DRAFT! #Habs

Gary Bettman. "Montreal is the city where the Draft has been held more times than anywhere else. What a wonderful place for a great celebration of hockey and the players who will shine in our League for years to come." #Habs #NHLDraft

You know what to do, Bergevin. Trade the entire team for the first overall pick. Do it.
Hmmm that might be worth attending.. love Montreal..

NHL Draft in 2020? Well... It's no outdoor game. But it's something #Habs

Negative
The other angle came from the “Habs are actually bad” crowd of Twitter. No surprise there. However, there was another crowd upset that the Montreal Canadiens were getting the draft considering they last had it in 2009 (only 10 years ago).
The Detroit Red Wings haven’t hosted since 1987, while the Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets, to name a few, haven’t hosted ever. It can be frustrating seeing the number of repeats given Vancouver is hosting for the third time in 20 years. However, the NHL makes the decision, and we won’t fault them on wanting to choose an electric city to welcome in the next generation of stars…
Makes sense since they will probably have the 1st overall pick...

Is this the consolation prize for Canada not being able to win the cup?

This portion was my favourite portion, where the humour started to come out. One, in particular, mentioned the Habs’ draft selection the last time it was in Montreal in Louis Leblanc (who is currently trending on Twitter) and any fan should know that didn’t go too well for either party.
They can call next years draft but still don’t know what this years cap is? Ridiculous!!!

Montreal will host the 2020 NHL Draft. Bruins hoping for better luck next summer after taking Jordan Caron in the first round the last time the draft was held at the Bell Centre. Remember that one like it was yesterday.

Louis Leblanc? I thought he retired already.... :)

It’s going to be a fun event and if you’re a Habs fan close enough to make the commute do so. Host teams try to give their fans something to cheer for, and it’ll be interesting to see what the Montreal Canadiens have in store for the Bell Centre.
