The Montreal Canadiens were well represented at last year’s World Junior Championship and could have several prospects at the tournament again next year.

The Montreal Canadiens prospects had a great showing at the World Junior Championships last season and could have another great tournament coming next winter. Today, Canada announced its roster for the World Junior Summer Showcase and it included two Habs draft picks.

The World Junior Summer Showcase is an annual exhibition event featuring teams from Canada, Sweden, Finland and the United States. Countries use it as a tune up and a way to evaluate potential players for the actual World Juniors in December and January.

Team Canada announced its roster today and it features a pair of Habs prospects. Cole Fonstad and Allan McShane will head to Plymouth, Michigan to take part in the event in July and August.

Fonstad is a member of the Prince Albert Raiders who were one of the top Junior teams in Canada all season. He scored 73 points in 67 games and helped the Raiders win the WHL championship and represent the league at the Memorial Cup. The 19 year old winger was taken by the Canadiens in the 5th round of the 2018 NHL Draft.

McShane was selected one round earlier than Fonstad, and had a solid season for the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League. The 19 year old had 69 points in 62 games and added another 14 points in 15 playoff games.

McShane has represented Canada twice before, and has performed extremely well on the world stage. Two years ago, at the World Under-17 tournament, McShane scored five points in six games and followed that up a year later with six points in five games at the under-18 tournament.

There were 43 players invited to the summer camp, including 25 forwards so it will a tough roster for the pair of Habs prospects to crack. However, just being invited is quite an accomplishment for the former 4th and 5th round picks as most players were first or second round picks or are predicted to be first rounders this season.
