Cayden Primeau signs an entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens signed another draft pick as Cayden Primeau receives his entry-level contract after wrapping things up at Northeastern.
Marc Bergevin likes to get his business done on a Sunday. The Montreal Canadiens finally brought their first-round pick from the 2017 NHL Draft over signing Ryan Poehling to an entry-level contract earlier in the day. But it looks like the Habs weren’t done yet as they announced the signing of seventh-round pick Cayden Primeau as well.
Primeau has been a fascinating story since Montreal selected him. He had an interesting draft year that had him discounted by several scouts playing 30 games for the Lincoln Stars of the USHL sporting a .895 save percentage. However, the Habs made sure to get a seventh-round pick so they could take him while he was still available on the board.
There was a lot of clout behind the goaltender being the son of NHL goaltender Keith Primeau and he proved all those teams who passed on him several times wrong with a great debut season in the NCAA. Primeau had a monster year finishing with a .931 save percentage and 1.92 goals against average after 34 games. He quickly gained fame around the college scene which was peaked with being recognized as the best goaltender in Hockey East.
His sophomore year saw Primeau prove that the year before wasn’t a fluke. He improved on his save percentage finishing with a .933 over 36 games as well as being named the Tournament MVP for Hockey East. Primeau was also on Team USA’s World Junior team who earned a silver medal.
It’s been nothing but success for him since the Montreal Canadiens called his name up from the crowd, and now, similar to Poehling, the plan is to turn pro.
He’s already confirmed to be joining the Laval Rocket so it’ll be interesting to see if he can get in any games for the time being. Laval has been running with Michael McNiven and Connor LaCouvee since Charlie Lindgren was called up. The team is on another year without the playoffs but that doesn’t mean they won’t be playing personal, meaningful hockey and getting Primeau in will be a good audition for next season which will likely see him there long-term.
The Montreal Canadiens prospect pool gets another gold star for finding another prospect good enough to commit to. Now it’s time to see what they can do at the next level.
