Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin will hold a press conference ahead of tonight’s game which could have different tones based on what happens beforehand
There aren’t many times you hear from a general manager during the season. Generally, it’ll be when there is an impact trade, or the team isn’t performing well. Marc Bergevin had a handful of those for the Montreal Canadiens last year when things weren’t looking too good and with things going completely opposite, save for Saturday, though Bergevin’s next press conference is one we should all expect.
The Habs announced Sunday that Bergevin will hold a press conference at 5:15 PM ahead of the team’s game against the New Jersey Devils. In other circumstances, that may make you cock an eyebrow, but don’t forget it’s trade deadline day.
Whether something happens with the Montreal Canadiens or doesn’t, Bergevin is going to talk. Now, what will he say exactly? That depends on what happens up to the moment the microphones are turned on.
If the Habs make any deals, both selling or buying, Bergevin will likely field questions on the process of the deal, what said player (or assets) do for the organization, or what they mean for the club as a whole.
Otherwise, expect Bergevin to have to describe where the Habs are relative to the rest of the league. Teams in the East are bulking up, and if Montreal chooses not to do anything, MB will have to provide some kind of rational why whether it’s because of the cost or the fit of the remaining names out on the market.
Bergevin is going to set the standard for how Habs fan should perceive the team for the rest of the season with this press conference. It’ll be interesting to see which side he pushes the narrative and how much.
