The Montreal Canadiens place Michal Moravcik on unconditional waivers

The days of Michal Moravcik as a part of the Montreal Canadiens system is over as the team has officially placed him on unconditional waivers.

Well, it’s the end of the road for Michal Moravcik. The Montreal Canadiens signed the Czech defenceman along with David Sklenicka were signed to matching two-year entry-level contracts after their strong performance at the World Hockey Championships. However, one excelled while the other fell to the depths of the Habs prospect pool.

Sklenicka secured more of a role with the Laval Rocket while Moravcik jumped between the AHL and ECHL playing four games with the Brampton Beast. In his 20 games in Laval, the 24-year-old put up a goal and two assists while having a pair of helpers in his Beast days. But anytime Moravcik was up; he could never secure a “full-time” spot on the Rocket blueline.

Brett Lernout and Cale Fleury to name a few have held the fort for the time being, but the demotions of David Schlemko, Xavier Ouellet, and a possible returning Karl Alzner has made things relatively congested.

And now the extent, or lack thereof, of that security from Moravcik’s game, has led to a termination.

The news came from Elliotte Friedman who tweeted at noon that Moravcik was being placed on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract. The destination for him afterwards is likely back to the Czech Republic possibly returning to play for HC Plzen where he was so accustomed to being in the organization since 2009.

Hopefully it helps Moravcik get himself back on track. On the Montreal Canadiens side of things, the termination opens a spot for another contract as they’re total is now at 43 out of a possible 50.

That space will come into play in the next few months when Scott Walford and Jarret Tyszka require contracts for the Habs to retain their rights. Otherwise, they go back to the draft, and with the growing pool of defencemen Montreal has put together, they’ll want to keep them.
