It’s that time of year where CHL teams bulk up for the playoffs and Montreal Canadiens prospect Nick Suzuki may find himself involved in the process.

There’s nothing like seeing the details of a CHL trade. The “going all in” line is thrown around a lot in the NHL, but major junior teams make the most out of it. If there’s any thought in their mind that they can win a championship, general managers don’t hesitate to give up draft picks four or five years down the line to acquire a top player. Some of these moves have already taken place, and an upcoming one may have ties to the Montreal Canadiens via Nick Suzuki.

Owen Sound is currently in a playoff spot as they sit fifth in the Western Conference with 45 points. However, it looks like the team is leaning on the selling side of things and are in talks with the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds (via OHL Insider on Twitter).

The Greyhounds made it all the way to the OHL Final sweeping the Saginaw Spirit while taking both Owen Sound and the Kitchener Rangers to seven games. They, unfortunately, couldn’t get past the Hamilton Bulldogs and lost the series in six. Based on the chatter around the league, the Soo is itching to get back to the final and perhaps win it and play in the Memorial Cup for the first time since 1993.

The team already has Morgan Frost who is leading the team in scoring with 20 goals and 38 assists in 32 games, but there is no such thing as having too much talent.

More from A Winning Habit

Other sources have said the Guelph Storm may be the destination for Suzuki. The Storm made the playoffs last season but were eliminated by the Kitchener Rangers in the first round. They’re currently fourth in the West with 47 points but haven’t been able to produce at the same rate as London, Sault St. Marie, or Saginaw.

Guelph hasn’t had as long as a Memorial Cup drought as the Soo as their last appearance was in 2014. But adding Suzuki to a team with the likes of Nate Schnarr (56 points in 36 games) and Issac Ratcliffe (39 points in 36 games) will be exciting for the organization and a headache for the rest of the OHL.

Either destination is an interesting one, yet seeing Suzuki reunite with Team Canada teammate Frost would be something special.

The 2017 first round pick is leading Owen Sound in scoring with 22 goals and 23 assists in 30 games. Suzuki has yet to participate at the Memorial Cup, and the furthest he’s been in the OHL playoffs was an East Conference final in 2017 losing in six games to the Erie Otters.

dark. Next. The Right Decision Was Made

This may be the year where all of that changes for Suzuki. We only have to wait and see what time it’ll be with.
