Montreal Canadiens prospect Alexander Romanov was on the wrong end of a hit in a Thursday game, and it’s not clear whether he’ll be out long-term.
It’s been a polarizing feeling for Montreal Canadiens fans as far as their prospects go. Wednesday saw a number of future players getting named to their national team camps ahead of the 2019 World Junior Hockey Championships. One of them was Alexander Romanov.
The 18-year-old made CSKA Moscow out of camp and has spent 28 games playing for them in the KHL. Romanov has improved as the season has grown gaining more of the coaching staff’s trust getting more minutes at 5-on-5 but he may have his first season interruption.
Patrik Bexel of Habs Eyes on the Prize capture this moment during Thursday’s game. CSKA was taking on Avangrad, and it was a scoreless game at the halfway mark of the opening period. Romanov, in the defensive zone, chased the puck carrier along the left wall and managed to poke the puck off his stick to a teammate.
Romanov got the puck back leaving him open to a hit from an Avangrad player. It didn’t look bad at first as it didn’t take long for the 2018 second-round pick to get back up and skate to the bench. Unfortunately, the 2:02 he saw during the first was the only time he’d see for the rest of the game.
There’s been no word on whether Romanov is injured or not, but it would be a tough blow considering how exciting it would’ve been to see him at the World Juniors. Hopefully, nothing negative comes out of this, but we’ll have to wait and see.
