Montreal Canadiens: There’s no need to target any other UFAs

The Montreal Canadiens had their fair share of signings on July 1st and should refrain going back to the open market unless something special comes up.

With the calendar counting down the days until August, the free agency market is reaching its dry end. What does that mean exactly? Its the point where teams shrug their shoulders and sign a player to a one-year deal or a professional try out to give them an opportunity to prove themselves at training camp. The Montreal Canadiens got things on the PTO side of things going with Simon Despres.

The Habs didn’t make a big splash on July 1st, but they brought four new and one familiar face to the organization. However, as most shoppers ask themselves, is it enough?

There are 57 remaining UFAs available. Rick Nash is at the top of the list though reports have been circulating that the 34-year-old may be contemplating retirement. Veterans Mike Cammalleri, Dan Hamhuis, and Scott Hartnell are still up for grabs as well. Another name that has been circulating is Toby Enstrom.

The 33-year-old finished his 11th season in the NHL and is still without a contract. Enstrom could fit into a depth role on the Habs roster for another year. Perhaps he even plays well enough to be a possible trade asset at the deadline. But the Montreal Canadiens shouldn’t change their position from after the Kenny Agostino signing. That should be their last one.

More from A Winning Habit

Montreal is already staggering the contract limit. If they were to sign an Enstrom, the number would be up at 47 and then 49 after Michael McCarron and Kerby Rychel are extended (assuming that happens). Additionally, it’s another name at training camp further congesting the competition for a spot on the team.

The Habs have a good deal of players competing as it is. Signing Enstrom to a PTO wouldn’t hurt, but handing him a guaranteed contract when he may not play isn’t ideal.

The importance of transactional freedom

The Montreal Canadiens have few players with contracts on their books which will be good for them moving forward when the time comes to unload.
