Montreal Canadiens: Arbitration dates set for Phillip Danault and Joel Armia
The Montreal Canadiens have two arbitration hearings for Phillip Danault and Joel Armia, and there are dates for both of them.
Although the Montreal Canadiens chose to qualify five of their nine restricted free agents, only three of them were eligible to elect for salary arbitration. The Habs managed to get Jacob de La Rose down to a two-year contract while Michael McCarron and Kerby Rychel lacked the professional experience for it.
However, Phillip Danault and Joel Armia could, and they did.
The NHLPA released the dates for the arbitration hearings this summer. Danault will be among the first crop of players to be seen as his is set for July 20th. Armia’s hearing is the first on the 25th followed by Joel Edmundson and Brandon Tanev.
Keep in mind that even though Danault and Armia are scheduled, the Montreal Canadiens can still sign them to new contracts. But if it goes the distance, it’ll be up to the third-party arbitrator to decide on the player’s salary.

This is where arbitration gets messy as both sides will do their best to make their case. That’ll include bringing up the player’s usage, projection, and importance to the team to name a few. Dealing with Armia may be a little easier and may also be worse.
The Habs definitely have their scouting reports on him from his time in Winnipeg, but he’s yet to play a game for the home team. At the same time, management can use the fact that he was a third-line option on the Jets as evidence in their case.
Danault, on the other hand, was relied upon in many situations and at the moment is the team’s best natural centre.
We’ll know how everything plays out in the next two weeks. By then, both should be signed. But how much they end up getting will be the true key piece of information.
