After the Montreal Canadiens announced that Shea Weber would need to recover from another surgery, fans got a certain topic trending on Twitter.

There were two phases in the fanbase’s reaction to the Shea Weber news. The Montreal Canadiens already put out that the veteran would be out until September recovering from surgery on his left foot, but now another six months was added because of his procedure on his right knee.

Safe to say that the fans were not pleased. Having Weber on the blueline would’ve been a big part of any bounce-back performance the Habs have. There’s still a chance Jeff Petry, Victor Mete and the rest of the defence play well, but it’ll be difficult for sure.

Some fans found irony in it, others were nonchalant, but a large portion began to project where the Habs would finish next season. So much so that a certain name started to trend on Twitter in Montreal. That name was Jack Hughes.

More from Habs News

Hughes is the consensus first overall pick for the 2019 NHL Draft. The centre put up impressive numbers in the U.S. National Development Program. Hughes scored 48 points in 24 games for the U17 Team, 68 points in 46 games for the U18 Team, and 54 points in 27 games for the Development Team.

Although the Montreal Canadiens are hoping for the playoffs, the fans are expecting a low-standing finish. It’s really tough to project something like that seeing as it’s only July. We’ll have to see how the team plays and comes together in the preseason. As we saw last September, those games aren’t as insignificant as many think.

It could very well be another tough season for the Habs. But I don’t think it’ll be that bad that they’re in the bottom five again. As history would show, the team responds well to those kinds of finishes.
