Montreal Canadiens new left winger Max Domi is going to need a new number when he suits up for the team for the first time.

With every new player to be added to the team, seeing what number they’ll have on the back of their sweater is always a fun mystery. Of all the fresh faces within the organization so far, Max Domi is the most likely to be guaranteed a spot on the Montreal Canadiens next season. But what number will he have on the back of his jersey?

Different players have different feelings towards it. Some don’t care while others have a special backstory towards it.

Domi has worn the number 16 dating back to his days in junior for the London Knights. He also had that number when playing internationally for Canada at the World Juniors and the World Hockey Championships. Unfortunately, that number will not be available to him.

The Montreal Canadiens have the highest amount of retired jerseys in the NHL. Henri Richard was the last Habs player to don 16 after it was raised to the top of the Bell Centre on December 10th, 1975.

Domi will have to work out something new here in Montreal. He could choose to do the ever-popular number switch as 61 is available. Jason Ward, Ben Maxwell, and Raphael Diaz have been the only Habs player to wear that. If high numbers aren’t Domi’s thing, he could go with the addition rule and scope out 17.

That number is the fifth most worn in franchise history as it’s been on the back of 31 players. Torrey Mitchell was the last Montreal Canadien to do so. Although it was mostly seen on the fourth line, Domi has a chance to add a little more star power to it.

Subtraction could work out as well seeing him wear 15. The likes of the Chris Terry, P.A. Parenteau, and PTO turned player signing Tomas Fleischmann had that going for them.

It’ll be a matter of time before we know what Domi is going to wear. I’d put money on 17 being his choice, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see an off the board selection happen as well.

With moving out another goal-scorer, you have to think whether Zadina is the Habs pick at the draft this week.
