Max Domi won’t be a restricted free agent for long as he’s expected to sign an extension with the Montreal Canadiens in the next set of days.

The hockey world is still getting used to the idea that Max Domi is now a part of the Montreal Canadiens. The process went from ‘in the works’ to ‘yeah it’s happening’ in the spread of minutes. Domi may be part of the team, but there is still something that needs to be made official.

Alex Galchenyuk had a contract pre-draft, Domi doesn’t. The 2017-18 season saw the end of the 23-year-old’s entry-level deal. Part of the trade was that the Habs an extension would come along with it to be worked out the management over the next set of days (via Elliotte Friedman).

However, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports believes that the extension could be done as early as Saturday.

To start, we can assume that whatever the deal is will have a decent amount of term with it. The Montreal Canadiens obviously value Domi as part of their potential core. Additionally, it would be tough to give up Galchenyuk with the possibility of your new acquisition leaving in three years. Therefore, a five or even six-year shelf life seems to be the most likely scenario.

Marc Bergevin also has the advantage of signing Domi for what he has done as opposed to what he will do. He would be the first to admit that there is more to his game and expects to reach or exceed his performance from his rookie season. The Habs may very well get him signed in the lower end of the Brendan GallagherAndrew Shaw realm of cap hits.

A $3-3.5 million AAV could end up being good value if Domi pans out the way the Montreal Canadiens hope. Gallagher’s $3.75 million cap hit looked pretty amazing after his 31-goal season. If anything, that should be the max Domi gets.

We’ll have to wait and see how the contract talks go, but it doesn’t look to be a long-term process.
