With Alex Galchenyuk moving on to the Arizona Coyotes, Charles Hudon is the last remaining piece of the Montreal Canadiens from the 2012 NHL Draft.

It’s unfortunate in some respects, but the Montreal Canadiens do have a knack for trading drafted talent. Some of the big names involved are Ryan McDonagh, Mikhail Sergachev, and as of Friday, Alex Galchenyuk. He was the team’s first selection at the 2012 NHL Draft taking him third-overall.

The Habs had six more draft choices that year. However, now that Galchenyuk is out of the picture, Charles Hudon is all that remains from that draft in 2012.

Sebastian Collberg was the team’s first of two second-round picks. He was traded to the New York Islanders for Thomas Vanek and a condition fifth in 2014. Montreal used that pick to take Nikolas Koberstein 125th overall. The other second became Dalton Thrower who the Habs chose not to qualify last June.

The third round saw the Montreal Canadiens take Tim Bozon who saw limited time with the team’s AHL and ECHL affiliate before being traded for Jonathan Racine at the beginning of the 2016-17 season. Brady Vail and Erik Nystrom served the same fate in seeing little time within the organization before getting left unsigned.

Hudon has proven to be a great pick. Montreal have the Columbus Blue Jackets to thank for the opportunity to draft him, and it’s been a great journey so far. A lot of these trades involving drafted talent have been scrutinized. Hopefully, this latest one proves to be a good one for Marc Bergevin. If not, at least Hudon looks to be a growing top six forward.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi isn’t an ‘off the board’ draft pick
