June is a busy month for most teams, but with the way Marc Bergevin has been handling the Montreal Canadiens as of late, it will be a month of payoff.

For a team that didn’t make the playoffs, April and May are kind of boring. The hockey is fun to watch and all, but you’re limited to the number of moves you can make as a lot of teams spend more of their time scouting. The Montreal Canadiens have chosen to use this time so far to sign new players and extend current ones. However, June is a different animal.

Things start to kick into high gear once the Stanley Cup is awarded. After that, the NHL’s main focus is the NHL Draft and the days leading up to it. Although the Habs are most likely hanging on to their first-round pick, other teams have announced a willingness to move on from them. There could be a lot of transactions occurring on that front, and Marc Bergevin will have his eyes open.

Additionally, some deals in the works may start to reach those final stages. Max Pacioretty comes up here as he’s an expected candidate for a roster change. The same goes for possibly Jordie Benn and/or David Schlemko.

Montreal may feel like they have to move them to make room for next season. There’s going to be significant competition to fill those remaining blueline spots. Bergevin may feel like its best to have a younger player take one of them.

There’s also another trade freeze coming up sometime around the draft. The Habs could choose to pull any triggers before then or wait it out until they’re on the floor. Once the draft passes by, the month ends with the days saved for free agent discussion with other teams.

The Montreal Canadiens definitely have their eyes set on a couple of them adding more on Bergevin’s offseason load. How all those events play out is still a mystery, but we’re close to finding out.
