The Montreal Canadiens were one of the teams interesting in potential free agent Jimmy Schuldt, but he has decided to return to college.

Multiple teams in the NHL have been waiting on what the word was around college defenceman Jimmy Schuldt, including the Montreal Canadiens. The interest as far as the Habs go has exceeded this season. Schuldt attended the team’s development camp last summer and had close ties to Ryan Poehling as they’re on the same college team.

Schuldt becoming a Montreal Canadien seemed like a foregone conclusion even though there was still the chance that he signs elsewhere. However, we still had to wait to hear from the 22-year-old on what his short-term future would be.

There was a chance that he could return to St. Cloud State for his senior year instead of making the jump to the pros, and yesterday it was revealed that he would be doing that (per Michael Russo).

Russo also confirmed that there was interest from several NHL teams, but that Schuldt saw more value in returning to the Huskies and help them win a national title. St. Cloud finished at the top of the NCHC but had their Frozen Four run cut early with a loss to the Air Force Falcons.

That looks to be a wrong that Schuldt wants to make right. If the Montreal Canadiens want to bring in the young defenceman, it will have to wait until next year.
