The Laval Rocket dropped another game, but possible options in the Montreal Canadiens organization in Trevor Owens and Adam Plant looked good in their debut.

The Montreal Canadiens have been adding a lot of what-ifs and maybe through the Laval Rocket in the last week. The two most recent names to join the fold were Trevor Owens from Northeastern University and Adam Plant from the University of Denver. Both are shut down defenceman who can skate, but Owens has more to prove. The 24-year-old was only signed to an amateur contract with the Laval Rocket while Plant already has a contract for next season.

You’d think Owens would falter or at least budge with the pressure of playing for a spot on the roster next year. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. Owens looked very confident for the Rocket and appeared to gain more confidence as the game continued. We were seeing him used in more situations of the night although he started the night on the second pairing next to Èric Gèlinas.

The young defenceman was on the ice for both of the Laval’s goals and received his first professional point on the team’s second goal. Everyone has a story of how they got their first tally and Owens had a funny one. Thomas Ebbing received a lobbing pass from the rookie in the defensive zone and took a shot on Eddie Lack from the wall. Unfortunately, Lack lost site of the puck leaving Jèrèmy Grègoire to put it past him.

You’ll take it in any form when making your debut and it’ll be interesting to see how Owens continues to play for the remainder of the season.

Plant, on the other hand, had a quiet game. He didn’t have the start he would’ve liked and at times looked a little overwhelmed, but managed to stabilize things for himself as the night went on.

Next: Paul Byon's Frustration

There are six games left for both players to show what they can bring to the team. The best thing for Owens to do is add a level of consistency to his performance and make sure that his play against the Binghamton Devils wasn’t a one-off. However, he’s clearly shown that he has what it takes to play in the AHL and can handle the grind of less than ideal situations. Perhaps Owens is the diamond the team has been looking for.
