Trevor Owens is the latest player to get a look in the Montreal Canadiens organization after signing an amateur tryout with the Laval Rocket.

The search for diamonds in the rough continues in the Montreal Canadiens organization with the signing of Trevor Owens to an amateur tryout with the Laval Rocket. Additionally, it’s the fourth defenceman in the last few weeks that has been brought on to the team in some capacity with Johnny Austin, Bailey Webster, and Adam Plant already on board.

Owens is coming off completing his final year at Northeastern University. If that school sticks out to you, it’s because it’s the same school 2016 sixth-round pick Hayden Hawkey attends. He had a lot of good things to say about his college teammate also mentioning that the Montreal Canadiens taking him so relatively late was a steal. Brownie points for acknowledgement.

The 24-year-old is a big-body two-way left-shot defenceman who can skate which has been a hallmark of players the Laval Rocket have added to their roster. Owens is a player who can jump up in the play on a rush, but prides himself in a more defensive game.

His two-goal six-assist senior season doesn’t shock many, but he was an option for Northeastern in key defensive situations during games.

You have to love what the Montreal Canadiens and Laval Rocket are doing here. Not all of these players are going to hit and Plant is the only one of the new signings who actually has a contract for next season. However, what they’re implementing into the locker room is a significant amount of internal competition. Austin and now Owens all shoot the same and in some ways are similar players.

Next: John Tavares and the Future

They’ve been given the keys to make an impression and earn a contract for next season. It’ll be interesting to see who stands up and who falls off. Austin is already in the lead in terms of recognition as he’s worked his way to the top pairing next to Matt Taormina. The ball is now in Owens court to prove he deserves to play.
