Montreal Canadiens: Andrew Shaw is done for the season for a different reason

MONTREAL, QC - FEBRUARY 28: Andrew Shaw
MONTREAL, QC - FEBRUARY 28: Andrew Shaw

It was revealed yesterday that Andrew Shaw will not be rejoining the Montreal Canadiens this season for a different reason than many expected.

The Montreal Canadiens game between the Dallas Stars was an intense one. The Stars desperately needed the two points while the Habs were playing for growth and their pride. Montreal came out with the win, but they had another loss to their team in Andrew Shaw.

A misplaced hit led to the agitator being knocked unconscious and sent to the dressing room. Many were worried that A. Shaw received his second concussion in less than a year which brought up discussions on the impact of all this head trauma. The Montreal Canadiens announced that the 26-year-old went home to rest and recover which began to confirm some of our suspicions. Claude Julien told reporters that A. Shaw wasn’t diagnosed with a concussion, but would continue to be monitored.

Two weeks later, news comes out that the Belleville native will not return to the team this season. In an article by La Presse, Doug Shaw, A. Shaw’s father, confirmed that it is a knee injury that is keeping him out.  Apparently the collision with Greg Pateryn that night reaggravated.

"He had to wear a knee brace and he was not in top shape before the game against Dallas. He did not suffer a concussion that night against the Stars, but he aggravated his [knee] injury by falling on the ice as a result of his collision with [Greg] Pateryn."

If you remember, A. Shaw missed 19 games with a lower-body injury after a rough night against the Boston Bruins.

This may be an example of a player coming back too soon as A. Shaw’s father also said that he shouldn’t have played those games. The article also mentioned the possibility of surgery to repair the damage. There hasn’t been any decision made, but it looks like it could go either way. However, taking the measures to make sure that it gets back to 100% are key.
