Montreal Canadiens: Carey Price is back leaving Charlie Lindgren for the AHL

PHILADELPHIA, PA - FEBRUARY 20: Carey Price

Carey Price will be dressing tonight for the Montreal Canadiens leaving Charlie Lindgren to return to the Laval Rocket to finish the season.

Similar to what happened earlier in the season, Carey Price looks to be ready to return to the lineup leaving Charlie Lindgren to get sent back down to the AHL. The Montreal Canadiens was without their starting goaltender for 13 games after suffering a concussion against the Philadelphia Flyers. Price has been practicing with the team for the last week, so his return to the team was coming soon, and he’ll at least be dressing for the Habs.

The team hasn’t confirmed whether Price will be starting tonight or not, but Antti Niemi seems to be the safer option. Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins could be the day where the 30-year-old plays again.

As for Lindgren, it was another impressive stint for the young goaltender as he continues to bring a boatload of optimism for the Habs organization. The 24-year-old played six games for the Montreal Canadiens and was only rewarded with one win for his efforts. This may be an exaggeration, but it seemed like Lindgren would have at least three highlight reel saves a night to try to keep the team in it.

Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs was a prime example. Even though the Habs were shutout 4-0, Lindgren had a few robberies, including the one on Tyler Bozak on the power play.

Unfortunately, it was an emergency recall that had Lindgren up with the Habs in the first place, so when Price was ready, he had to go back. Now he has another nine games to finish up an interesting year in the AHL with the Laval Rocket. Afterwards, it’s still up in the air.

The Habs have Lindgren signed to a three-year extension, and it looks like he will be the backup next season. However, Niemi has had a quality second half as well, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him resigned as well. That will be something to track in the offseason.
