The Montreal Canadiens made one of their biggest trades this season yesterday, but there is a possibility that more is done by 3:00 PM.
Today is the day. The Trade Deadline is an NHL event to look forward to as it gives a clear look at who is going for a start and who is going for the Stanley Cup. The Montreal Canadiens are in the seller zone and already started with moving Jakub Jerabek and Tomas Plekanec yesterday. It’s going to be very weird to see him in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, but by the sound of things, it won’t last long.
Although the Habs have moved on from their big UFA of the season, there is still a possibility that Marc Bergevin keeps the team active trade-wise. Moving away from some of their other players on the team has been something that would make sense for Montreal. Jordie Benn, David Schlemko, Joseph Morrow, and Daniel Carr to name a few are players who could be moved to make room on the active roster.
Consider the return that other depth players have been getting from other teams; there’s no reason why Bergevin couldn’t get a mid to late pick for any of them. Additionally, the Habs have been rumoured to be in on a multi-team trade to help the Ottawa Senators involving Erik Karlsson. There’s going to be cap-issues for the team looking to acquire him, which at the moment seems to be the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Bergevin could get a pick or perhaps a roster player for taking some of it on.

It’s a busy day for the Habs regardless of the deadline. The team will be having a morning skate in Brossard and then play the Philadelphia Flyers later at the Bell Centre. More changes from the roster could be made aside from the ones mentioned before. Obviously, the smoke is around Max Pacioretty as teams are circling around to acquire him after Rick Nash was taken off the table.
Bergevin still has the option to keep the 29-year-old, who scored his 17th of the season on Saturday, but it wouldn’t be surprising if a trade occurred with all the talk going on.
All of this is going to be interesting to track so make sure to keep your eyes on your television screen and phones or your ears on the radio. The Habs could do nothing else, or make a splash to a deadline buyer. Which one is it?
