Montreal Canadiens: It’s only the beginning for Jonathan Drouin

MONTREAL, QC - JANUARY 15: Jonathan Drouin

Jonathan Drouin’s performance in last night’s game was another example of what the Montreal Canadiens have in the young budding star.

We don’t have to sugar coat anything. Jonathan Drouin took the Montreal Canadiens, put them on his back and yelled, “Let’s go for a ride boys.” It’s easy to look at the point totals and think that was his best game of the season. Although it was his first three-point performance with the Habs, scoring the game-winning goal and putting up two assists, there was much more that the 22-year-old was doing out there.

Drouin was solid in the faceoff dot finishing the game at 73% and used his speed and hockey sense to overwhelm the Colorado Avalanche at every opportunity he got. His performance on the power play was something to behold, but the entire sequence leading up to the team’s first goal was impressive.

Going from a defensive zone faceoff win to getting through the Avalanche players with ease and finally allowing Nicolas Deslauriers to pounce on a loose puck is exactly what you’d expect from an effective NHL centre. We’ve seen plays like this before from Drouin, but we’re a greedy group of people here. Give us more!

Perhaps the Montreal Canadiens should face the Avs more often. There’s no doubt that playing against Nathan MacKinnon sparked Drouin up a bit. If he can play at this pace on a regular basis, there’s no telling what he can do for this team in the future.

I think it’s fair to say this this is the Jonathan Drouin the Habs traded for.
