Montreal Canadiens: Marc Bergevin is working on a rebuild
According to a Calgary radio hit, GM Marc Bergevin is apparently starting to work on a rebuild for the Montreal Canadiens moving forward.
The truth shall set you free! The signs were there at the beginning of the season, and it continued as the Montreal Canadiens continued to struggle. However, it was more than a lost year, the organization needed an impactful change, and that could only be accomplished by a bottom ten or bottom five finish.
Marc Bergevin didn’t help his image with the fan base after voicing his belief in a late playoff push, but there’s nothing that can back up that belief anymore. On the bright side, it looks like Bergevin has finally accepted what needs to be done.
Brian Wilde of recrutes.ca tweeted that Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was on Calgary radio and talked about Bergevin’s future plans. A lot of general managers are already active as the NHL Trade Deadline approaches, and he is one of them. Most importantly, according to Friedman, Bergevin is working on the rebuild.
Everyone is available save for Victor Mete and Carey Price which could make the Montreal Canadiens a hot spot for assets. Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec were two names most likely on their way out already, but now that we know it’s a rebuild opposed from a retool, it looks like anyone can go.

It’s also interesting that Geoff Molson would give Bergevin the keys to the car for this. This has been Bergevin’s team for the last six years, and you’d think Habs management would want a new voice or thought process in charge of a rebuild.
A new man in charge could still be the plan though. Molson may be allowing Bergevin to get things started but then find someone else to follow it through in the offseason.
We’ll have to wait for that, but hearing the Habs are doing what they need to do is comforting. The 2017-18 season may be a dud, but at least there’s light at the end of this tunnel.
