The Montreal Canadiens dipped their toe into the waiver wire claiming forward Logan Shaw from the Anaheim Ducks on Monday.
It hasn’t been that long since the Montreal Canadiens looked to waivers for an addition to their roster. The last time that happened, it was Antti Niemi being picked up from the Florida Panthers, which at first looked like a nightmare of an idea. However, the veteran goaltender has been the backup the Habs needed back when Carey Price was injured and Charlie Lindgren was holding down the fort as the team’s starter.
Now, Logan Shaw – no relation to Andrew Shaw – will be joining the fold. The 26-year-old was a third overall pick by the Panthers in 2011 but has struggled to form a name for himself in the NHL. Shaw so far has two goals and six assists in 42 games with the Ducks but was put on waivers to make room for J.T. Brown who the team just claimed from Tampa Bay themselves.
The Glace Bay native doesn’t necessarily have eye-opening production, but his size and ability to work players along the boards and get a cycle going is a significant aspect to his playing style. Claude Julien could work with a player like Shaw and if he does play games for the Habs, it’ll most likely be somewhere in the team’s bottom nine.

At the same time, this could be a good opportunity for Shaw to establish a role for himself in a new organization, similarly to what Nicolas Deslauriers did when he was traded for and eventually called up. With Phillip Danault probably out long-term – depending on the severity of his injury – there’s an open spot in the forward group.
Byron Froese and Daniel Carr are still around and kicking waiting for their next opportunity to play, so we’ll have to see who of the three get the tap on the shoulder. There’s already a free spot with Andrew Shaw being out with a lower-body injury, and although the initial timeline is 7-10 days, there’s a chance it could be longer.
Keep in mind, Shaw was a fourth line option for the Ducks, so we can’t expect too much from him on this team, but crazier things have happened.
