Morning Canadiens: Losing much more than a rivalry game

MONTREAL, QC - OCTOBER 28: Phillip Danault

It was an entertaining game for the Montreal Canadiens, but they still managed to pick up a point in the shootout loss to the Bruins.

Sometimes there are moments that remind us that this is more than a game. Seeing what happened to Phillip Danault was one of those times. After being on the receiving end of a Zdeno Chara slap shot to the head, the Montreal Canadiens chose to let him stay in the hospital overnight.

Thankfully Danault was responsive and able to move his arms and legs even after the initial hit, but it’s still scary and unfortunate to see something like that happen. Claude Julien confirmed that he would be re-evaluated so we’ll have to see how that plays out.

The Habs will have to make their rearrangements to fill in Danault’s spot. The simplest answer to that problem is that Byon Froese will get back in the lineup which – no offence to him – isn’t a good enough one considering the difference in ability. However, that’s the only short-term option they have right now.

Now we have to think about the Habs’ playoff chances after this shootout loss. Regardless of the single point, they’re pretty much done. I mean you could argue that they were done weeks ago, but there’s a really slim chance they make it. If they lose again to the Bruins next week, then there’s no escaping the truth.
