Team Canada wrapped up their pre-tournament games and still need to name a captain; Montreal Canadiens rookie Victor Mete should get the honour.

We’ve gotten through selection camp and the formation of the final roster. If Team Canada’s two pre-tournament games are a sign of what’s to come for them once the real games begin, then they should be able to hand themselves pretty well. Montreal Canadiens rookie Victor Mete was without a point in both, but he still showed fans why he’ll be a staple on the team’s blueline for years to come.

It may be because Mete is playing with players closer to his age, but he looks significantly faster. It’s not just in his skating though. Mete is also making smart decisions with the puck and playing with a level of calmness and poise we saw from him in Montreal.

Now that the next stop is Boxing Day against the Czech Replubic, Canada will have to name a captain. Whenever that announcement is made, hopefully, its decided that Mete will be wearing the ‘C’ for Canada.

The NHL experience isn’t just the main reason why. Playing against men has taught Mete a lot, and he had the benefit of being around some great leaders in Max Pacioretty, Shea Weber, and Brendan Gallagher.

However, Mete knows how it is to play in a pressure cooker like this. His London Knights team won the OHL Championship and the Memorial Cup at the end of the 2015-16 season. It may not be in the same scheme, but there’s value in playing in games like those.

It’s amazing what kind of effect a calming voice from a winner can have on the bench. Additionally, being captain would do wonders for Mete’s confidence and set him up for an impactful return if the Montreal Canadiens decided to keep him in the NHL.

The World Juniors is already an incredible event in hockey, and Mete being on the team has made it more of a must-watch for Habs fans. However, it would it would be pretty special to watch Canada play knowing one of the organizations’ finest is serving as captain.
