The annual FanSided Fandom 250 is up and running, and the results for 2017 are out where the Montreal Canadiens fan base was ranked 4th.

There’s a reason FanSided has the word ‘fan’ in it. Not only are there fans providing content around the network whether it’s for the NHL or other leagues, but they miss a chance to acknowledge said fans. Currently, FanSided has been ranking fan bases for their annual Fandom 250, and when it comes to the Montreal Canadiens, their’s is among the best.

The Habs fan base sits fourth in the NHL category behind the Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Chicago Blackhawks. Among all fan bases on the network, the Habs are 120th which is a 30 spot improvement from last year.

Does this ranking make sense? Yeah of course it does. The Penguins and Blackhawks have been two of the most successful franchises in the last decade where both have lifted the Stanley Cup three times. At the same time, the Habs and Leafs on top of being Original Six teams, also have the most history and dedicated fan bases.

Montreal has the most cup wins in NHL History with 25 and have had a lot of great players don the logo such as Maurice Richard, Guy Lafleur, and Patrick Roy to name a few. Sure it’s been almost 24 years since the Hab’s last Stanley Cup, but no other fan base want their team to succeed more.

That’s what makes their struggles this season so frustrating, but they’re slowly starting to turn things around. It won’t all be about the past. Fans have Carey Price, Brendan Gallagher, Alex Galchenyuk, Max Pacioretty, and Jonathan Drouin to be excited for each night.

Hearing the people in the stands at the Bell Center or reading all the thoughts and opinions on social media speaks to the effect the team has throughout the city. The Montreal Canadiens deserve to be fourth. Hopefully, next year they’ll find themselves in the top three.
