A team must always be on the lookout to add new talent to their organization, and it looks like the Montreal Canadiens may have interest in Jimmy Schuldt.

As fate would have it, the Montreal Canadiens were front and center of Elliotte Friedman’s latest 31 Thoughts. That’s to be expected considering all the news that’s been circling the team lately. However, there’s always something more in these weekly articles, and fans have their fix.

According to Friedman, the Habs had a scout watch St. Cloud State take on the University of Denver last weekend. You see that and automatically think that it was just a simple check in on 2017 1st round pick Ryan Poehling. The 19-year-old has had a pretty good start to his season with three goals and seven assists in nine games for the Huskies.

In most cases, that was the reason for the scout appearance, but apparently, there was someone else on the radar: team captain Jimmy Schuldt. If that name stands out to you at all, it should. Schuldt attended the Montreal Canadiens development camp last summer and was a standout among invites.

The St. Cloud Senior is putting up even better numbers than Poehling with 13 in nine games. Additionally, he’s tied for second in plus/minus in the entire NCAA. Not only can he score and skate well, but Schuldt is also a physical defenceman and uses his six-foot-one and 205-pound frame to his advantage every night.

Friedman also mentioned that there would be other teams trying to acquire Schuldt’s services when the times comes. No surprise there, with numbers like that you’re bound to attract attention.

You also have to factor in that other teams have had the chance to see him up close as Schuldt has attended both Chicago Blackhawks and New York Islanders development camps in the past. With Poehling already being part of the organization, and him having been here before, you have to think Montreal would be on the top of his list.

The only thing that may be difficult to promise would be a roster spot. One, because he should earn it, and two, we don’t know what the blueline will look like next season. It could even be the year after that considering Schuldt is only a junior and could return for his senior year.

I’ve been focusing on St. Cloud and how their season has been going because of Poehling. If this interest in Schuldt continues, I may need to start keeping my eye on him as well.
