Montreal Canadiens: It’s More Than a Slump, the Team is in Trouble

The Montreal Canadiens are at the lowest they’ve been in a long time and it’s getting to the point where they won’t be able to recover.

The Montreal Canadiens have not won a game since their season opener against the Buffalo Sabres. After that, they lost their next four games only obtaining a single point. The next set of games would be in California where the Habs haven’t had success in the past. However, they were going in 1-3-1 so there was hope that some urgency could sway things in their favour.

They needed to change things and not have history work against them. Wishful thinking and optimism didn’t do much for Canadiens fans as they lost those three games as well. Montreal is now 1-6-1. They’re last in the Atlantic Division and the entire Eastern Conference. The only team in the NHL who has been worse are the Arizona Coyotes.

“It’s still early”, has past. Is it fair to say that the season is done? Maybe not. Montreal is still close enough (points wise) to rise up in the standings. However, the way the team is playing is a massive problem.

This group of players are not working as a unit. Everyone, save for a few, have been disappointing. Some of the goals against in Friday’s game were on Carey Price, but there a handful that he couldn’t stop. I’m not absolving him though, he needs to be better.

His moment of anger after the sixth goal could either be seen as a good thing or a bad thing. On one hand, Price’s heated emotions could spark him to return to that level fans have seen him play at for the last number of years. On the other hand, he could be expressing his displeasure in the entire team. Think back to last season when he gave Michel Therrien the stare after being pulled.

That being said, it would be nice to get more goals! This topic has been beaten to death since last season, but the Montreal Canadiens can’t score and it rebounds on Price. He isn’t getting any goal support from the rest of the team except from Jonathan Drouin and Paul Byron.

Max Pacioretty, Artturi Lehkonen, Alex Galchenyuk, and Shea Weber, the players on the team looked upon for offence aren’t doing anything. There is absolutely no buffer in any of the games the Habs play because they can barely score more than three goals.

The Montreal Canadiens are in trouble. It’s shocking to say that this is a Claude Julien coached team. The only time they looked close to that in the Ducks’ game was in the second period. Whatever management plans to do, they have to do it fast. There’s no way Montreal continues to play at this pace (which is a 30-point pace to be exact), but the season is slowly slipping out of their fingers.
