The Montreal Canadiens are set to play against the Ottawa Senators in the NHL100 Classic and will hopefully have new uniforms to go with it.
100 years of the NHL will continue to be celebrated this upcoming season. It’s nice to know that the Montreal Canadiens will be included in one of the biggest events for it this year.
Last March it was announced that the Habs and the Ottawa Senators will be facing each other in the NHL 100 Classic. The outdoor game will commemorate the two teams of the past that played on the NHL’s opening night back in 1917.
This will be the fourth outdoor game that the Montreal Canadiens have played. The previous three were a:
- 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers in 2003 at Commonwealth Stadium
- 4-0 loss to the Calgary Flames in 2011 at the Heritage Classic
- 5-1 win over the Boston Bruins in 2016 at the Winter Classic
If history is on the Habs’ side, they should win this game. Back in 1917, the Canadiens won by a score of 7-4. Montreal forward Joe Malone scored five of those seven goals.

Obviously fans are excited for the game itself. However, another thing to look forward to are the jerseys the team will wear. It’s always nice to see the team changes things up at times, especially for an event like this.
So what will the NHL 100 uniforms look like?
New But Old Uniforms
The jerseys used for the 2016 Winter Classic had mixed reviews from the fan base at first. After some time, the feelings towards them warmed up.
It was a modernized old school look that had a lot elements of Canadiens’ teams of the past. Stu Cowan, in his article, made note of the specific colouring and the globe on the arms which was worn by the team after they won their first Stanley Cup.
Since the game is to remember that first game, why not have them wear the same sweaters?
There’s always a push to modernize things, but keeping it the same while making minor alterations would look pretty nice. Malone led the team in scoring that year for the Montreal Canadiens. Perhaps Max Pacioretty may feel the history and light the Sens up during the game.
Whatever the Habs decide to wear, it’s pretty special to know that they’ll be at the forefront of the next 100 years of NHL history.
