The Montreal Canadiens are finally starting to get healthy. To make room for players coming off injured reserve, Chris Terry has been placed on waivers.

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that winger Chris Terry has been placed on waivers. With the Habs dealing with several injuries, Terry was recalled last month. However, with two key forwards returning from injury for tonight’s game, Terry became expendable.

Terry has played extremely well for the St. John’s Ice Caps this season. He leads the team with ten goals and 26 points in 20 games for the American Hockey League squad. That’s exactly what he was brought into the organization to do.

The 27 year old winger was signed last summer to a one-year contract at $600,000. He was clearly signed to provide veteran scoring for the minor league team in Newfoundland. The Brampton, Ontario native certainly hasn’t disappointed in that endeavour.

Though he has put up fantastic numbers in the AHL, Terry’s scoring prowess just hasn’t translated to the NHL. In 14 games with the Habs this season, he scored a pair of goals and chipped in two assists for four points.

Terry has always been a great minor league player, hasn’t scored in NHL

This isn’t a new phenomenon for the right winger. Last season he played most of the season with the Carolina Hurricanes. In 68 games he had eight goals and just 11 points. He’s now up to 152 career NHL games, and has scored 22 goals and 38 points.

However, every time he is sent to the AHL, he piles up points. In 2013-14 he played 70 games with the Hurricanes top affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers. He scored 28 goals and 69 points that season.

Terry is just a classic 4A player to make a baseball reference. He dominates every league he plays in aside from the NHL, but can’t score when he plays in the best league in the world. He provides solid veteran scoring depth for a team, but can’t be counted on to be a regular NHL player.

The move to send down Terry shows the Canadiens are finally getting healthy. Alex Galchenyuk and Andrew Shaw will both return to the lineup tonight after long absences. It’s bad news for Terry, but a positive sign since it shows the team is getting reinforcements.

It’s unlikely he will be claimed on waivers. Terry will then be sent back to the Ice Caps where they will be more than happy to have their top scorer back.
