Andrew Shaw scored a late goal verse the Anaheim Ducks to keep the Montreal Canadiens alive, but then took a senseless penalty which ended the game.

Montreal Canadiens Forward Andrew Shaw had been having a great game and was fulfilling his role as a pest. In the first period he even got into a scrap with Ducks forward Corey Perry. Obviously, this is a good trade off for the Canadiens, as they had one of the NHL’s best snipers gone for a five minute penalty.

The Habs controlled the play early on, but the Ducks controlled the play for the rest of the game. The Ducks took a two goal lead heading into the third period.

The Montreal Canadiens started pressing and tried to generate offense as the game came to an end. In the late minutes of the game Head Coach Michel Therrien pulled Goaltender Carey Price to give the Habs an extra attacker. Then, Andrew Shaw scored a big goal to bring the Canadiens with in one goal of tying the game.

More from A Winning Habit

The goal was a result of Shaw’s hard work and determination. He made a great effort down low along the boards as both teams were battling for a loose puck. Then Shaw followed the play by going hard to the net, finding the loose puck, and then jammed the puck in the net.

The Bad Penalty

However, as the last few minutes wore on the Habs found themselves back in Anaheim’s zone and battling for a loose puck. This is where Andrew Shaw took a brutal hooking penalty and this effectively killed the Habs momentum for the rest of the game. The penalty was obvious and unnecessary, as Galchenyuk was clearly going to win the race to the puck.

Shaw clearly was upset by the call and was extremely vocal with the officials about it. Andrew kept hollering and screaming at officials from the penalty box. Shaw continued to show his displeasure by breaking his stick on the penalty box door and over his knee.

The Referees had no choice but to kick Andrew Shaw out of the game. The Refs gave Shaw a ten minute game misconduct penalty. This brought Shaw’s penalty minute total up to 17 for the game.

As Shaw skated off the Ice, he punched the stick rack knocking all the sticks over and still kept up his yelling at the officials. Shaw’s actions were way over the top and he showed a lack of class. Andrew Shaw has already been spoken to by the league for some of his dirty hits, and he could be getting another phone call for these actions.

Habs Need Shaw to be Smart

The Penalty Shaw took against Perry in the first period was a smart penalty to take. It gave the Habs a chance to play five minutes without the offensive threat of Perry. The Hooking Penalty that Shaw took was lazy and unnecessary.

Shaw is an extremely effective player for the Montreal Canadiens and he is one of their better offensive zone face-off men. The Canadiens also could have used his strong net presence during the remaining seconds of the game. The Habs certainly don’t need Shaw’s antics either because this no doubt will only bring distraction to the team.
