Should Montreal Target Yashin?

Ok, maybe 3 of 4 years ago you would be calling me crazy. Alexi Yashin? Who would want him? Well according to multiple reports, an unnamed team in the east has offered the 37 year old a 2 year contract. It will not be a big number, due to his inconsistent play in the NHL, and getting released from his KHL contract with SKA St. Petersburg.

So how did he do in Russia?

-56GP, 16G, 27A, 43 Points With Lokmotiv Yaroslavl (2007-2008)
-56GP, 21G, 26A, 47 Points With Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (2008-2009)
-56GP, 18G 46A, 64 Points with SKA St. Petersburg (2009-2010)
-52GP, 15G, 18A, 33 Points with SKA St. Petersburg (2010-2011)
-164GP, 54G, 90A, 14; Points in KHL
-26 Points in 27 Playoff Games

Not that bad, right?

Well check out some of his NHL stats.

-781 Points in 850 Games.
-Best season: 94 Points in 1998-1999 With The Ottawa Senators.

So why would he be a good pickup?

He would be signed for less then Jamoir Jagr, who got a 1 Year, $3.3M deal with the Flyers. He would likely play on the third line with Gomez and Darche. That may help Gomez find the spark he lost after leaving New Jersey.

While their are many people who criticize Yashin’s lazy, inconsistent play, he still has offensive ability, shown from his years in Russia. Was Montreal the team to offer him a contract? Nobody outside of Yashin, his agent, and the team that offered him a contract know, but it’s a possibility. If they can get him Cheap, I would sign him. He can buff up the offense on the bottom 2 lines. It would also give any rookies a chance to develop for a year or 2 more.

What do you think? Is he worth signing?
