The Montreal Canadiens lost the three games they needed to win, and it looks like the entire fan base is committed to what needs to be done.

Coming out of the bye week, there were three games on the upcoming schedule that the Montreal Canadiens needed points in. All three were against the Boston Bruins, and all three resulted in a loss.

The fan base, at least as far as Twitter, has been pretty back and forth on where they wanted the team to go. After the second Bruins loss, there was a lot of anger and frustration and the usual call for Marc Bergevin‘s job. However, seeing the Habs beat the Washington Capitals seemed to re-spark the optimism that some had all season.

I’m not going to take away from how well Montreal played. They came at the Capitals strong and played a complete game despite some penalty trouble. That being said, that was just one game. All teams have their good games, and all teams have their bad games, but a team will always should you what they are.

Jared Brook of Habs Eyes on the Prize had a good tweet after Saturday night’s loss that sums everything up.

If you personally haven’t been on board with Team Lost Season, there’s no way you can deny it now. Just in case there’s still a shimmer of hope, one of our contributors Kamal Rehman broke down what the Habs would need to do to make the playoffs.

On top of the above stats, you would have to factor in the other teams ahead of them who are trying to win every night as well. It’s over.

What’s Next?

With 44 points on the season, the Montreal Canadiens sit sixth last in the league, but they’re not too far off from the bottom five. Right now, fans have the individual success for certain players to look forward to.

The prime example is Max Pacioretty who after scoring his 15th goal of the season has seven in his last seven games. The flames are continuing to burn from him, and it couldn’t have come at the best time.

More from Editorials

I’ve seen some people post on Twitter and Reddit that the Habs are going to regret trading Pacioretty after he goes to another team and gets his 30 goals. It’s definitely going to be hard to see a former player have success with another team. However, this needs to happen.

And it’s not just Pacioretty, whoever needs to go to benefit the team long-term needs to go. I’m sure Habs management has more untouchables than Victor Mete and Carey Price, but at this point, wrongs need to be made right. Finishing as low as possible, loading up on young talent, and growing said talent is the only way.

There are 35 more games left of this season. Keep in mind that you know who and what this team is. It doesn’t make you a fairweather fan to know what’s best long-term. If everything works out, come June, it will all be worth it.
