Montreal Canadiens prospect Martin Rèway has many goals in his first season since recovering from his heart illness, one of which is making the team.

The Montreal Canadiens rookie camp started on Friday in preparation for the tournament. All eyes, cameras, and microphones were on 2013 4th round pick Martin Rèway. He’s been the feel-good story around the organization after he learned he was cleared to play after missing the entire season recovering from a heart illness.

Habs fans were excited for him well ahead of last season. The right-winger has been a star at every level he’s played in. 42 goals and 70 assists in 90 QJMHL games, 21 points in 18 games at the World Juniors, and 52 points in 48 games for HC Sparta Praha of the Czech League.

It makes sense why many would expect a lot from him this year. Of course, the 22-year-old expects a lot from himself. In fact, TSN 690’s Joey Alfieri tweeted out a specific goal that Rèway has for himself.

That matches the same belief that some Montreal Canadiens fans have. The team has voiced a need to add more offence to the line-up and Rèway could definitely be an option. The offensive skill that he was can’t be ignored by anyone especially how well he handles the puck.

Rèway still has another two years left on his entry-level-contract, and could play for the Habs or the Laval Rocket. Even though he’s a great player and there’s a lot of excitement around him, Rèway wont make the Montreal Canadiens.

No one is doubting his determination or perseverance, but it would be incredible to go from not playing a whole year to NHL competition every night. It may be in Rèway’s best interest to start the year in Laval even if he has a great training camp. Additionally, it’ll be easier to send him down to the AHL opposed to others in the organization that would need waivers.

It all starts Friday against the Toronto Maple Leafs for Rèway. Fans predict he’ll be one of the standouts and I doubt he’ll disappoint. That being said, it wouldn’t be terrible for us to temper our expectations a bit.

If Rèway doesn’t come out as strong as we hope he will, it wont be a slight on his game. Nevertheless, give him a month or two, and he’ll give Habs fans more to be excited about.
