Canadiens Win Round 1: How Twitter Reacted

There was no shortage of excitement in Game 6. The Montreal Canadiens were – as they’d been for 2 previous games – just a win away from taking the series from the Ottawa Senators, but nothing could be taken for granted.

And nothing was. If you watched this game, you know it all came down to those last three minutes. The penalty on Jacob De La Rose, and the empty net giving Ottawa an extra attacker.

Every single face-off was heart-stopping pressure. Every single shot on Carey Price was electrifying suspense. And every super-human save Price made brought on sighs of relief; at least, until the next face-off, and the whole process started again.

Many of the Canadiens are on Twitter, but it was unusual to see a tweet posted after the game.

Montreal forward, Brandon Prust, tweeted shortly after the game was over. He captured the essence of every fan:

There is much to analyze about this game. Mat Germain has done a great job here.

As a friend just pointed out to me, quite apt in her assessment, Habs fans are like a family. And it’s true; one big entity, fans worldwide as well as local to Montreal, connected by our love for hockey, our allegiance to the Habs, and our ability to interact electronically.

I rediscovered Twitter because of the Canadiens, and the vast number of people who are fans.

Watching a game with Twitter on a device is always an experience. A mix of negative and positive, and everything in between. Humor, entertainment, and fun can be some of the positives of Twitter.

Today, The Day After, I have culled some of the more amusing, entertaining, and enlightening tweets from the Twitterverse.

Here, from the evening as it wore on, and the morning’s jubilation, are some of the best I came across on my timeline.

A Habs friend from Twitter had this suggestion:

I like it!

Bobby Dollas, a former NHLer who played with numerous teams, including the Detroit Red Wings, and is now a commentator on Montreal radio, tweeted this:

Terry Mosher – also known as Aislin – is a Montreal legend. He has been a Montreal editorial cartoonist for over 4 decades, and covers all varieties of topics. His post-game piece sums it up beautifully, and he tweeted it out after the game was over:

Montreal’s Major League Soccer team, the Montreal Impact, tweeted after the game as well. The Impact have a huge championship game on Wednesday night.

I wonder if Carey Price and/or PK Subban will accept – and I’m pretty sure they’ll be comped tickets!

In light of Ottawa’s famed back-up goalie, Andrew Hammond, whose nickname is taken from McDonald’s Corporation’s The Hamburglar (which is painted on Hammond’s mask), McDonald’s Quebec made an announcement:

(In other words, in honor of the Habs’ victory, McDonald’s restaurants in the Province of Quebec are giving away free cheeseburgers for the day)

Was it a dig at the Hamburglar not being able to win the series for his team? Or just a way to celebrate? Given the campaign a couple of years ago, when Montreal faced the Boston Bruins and all Montreal-area Boston Pizza restaurants did this, it might just be the former.

And finally, the Habs’ Twitter account put this out today; to me, it symbolizes all that this is about: the celebration, the history, the hope and the accomplishments:

What about you? Did you tweet last night? Or post on Facebook? See any great posts you’d like to share? We’d love to hear from you!
