Brad Marchand is perhaps the most hated player in the National Hockey League by fans of the Montreal Canadiens, and he admitted last night that the feeling is at least partially mutual.
Marchand was in his home province of Nova Scotia where he was attending a charity event in Halifax with many fellow NHLers from the area including Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Andrew MacDonald, James Sheppard and recent second round pick Mason MacDonald among others.
John Moore who was covering the event, and is the radio voice of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Halifax Mooseheads, posted the video to his website, sportsandmoore.com, of Marchand responding to the question of which player he dislikes the most in the NHL. After some pondering, Marchand pointed to the Canadiens Tomas Plekanec.
Though he did not say it at the time, Marchand pretty much confirmed his most hated rival is Plekanec during the postseason, and remember, actions speak louder than words. When the two were lining up for a face-off during Game 7 of the series between the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins this past spring. With both referees attention elsewhere Marchand gave Plekanec a strong, unexpected jab to the chops.
In the video, like in the series, Plekanec seems to get the last laugh after a few comments are exchanged between the pair.
Marchand makes it more difficult for Habs fans to hate him when he is spending time near his hometown helping raise money for at-risk and homeless children, but even at these events the Habs Bruins rivalry remains heated.
