So far in our vote to predict the Montreal Canadiens lineup this season, we have picked Max Pacioretty and David Desharnais to play on the top line, and either P.A. Parenteau or Brendan Gallagher will be joining them.
Now we will take a look at who will be centering the second line for the Habs this year. With Desharnais centering the top line, there remain several strong candidates down the middle for the Habs.
Tomas Plekanec is the Canadiens best two way forward, but without usual linemate Brian Gionta, his role is up in the air a bit at this point. Is he still a second line player, or will his defensive play see him drop down a line and be a shutdown specialist from the third line?
Plekanec was third on the team in points last season with 43, and scored the second most goals with 20. He still has some offence left in his game, but will his offensive role start to go to a younger player?
Alex Galchenyuk was drafted as a center and thus far has been used as a left winger for most of his NHL career. He has shown flashes of offensive brilliance, but only scored 13 goals and 31 points in 65 games last season. He would produce more if used as a second line center and given more power play time, but will that happen this season?
Lars Eller is a big center who has also shown flashes of potential, but hasn’t put together a strong full season yet in his career. He started last season strong, but struggled mightily for long stretches of the season before exploding in the playoffs. He had just 26 points in 77 regular season games, but led all Habs forwards with 13 points in 17 postseason games.
Was Eller’s playoff breakout enough to replace Plekanec as the Habs second offensive center behind Desharnais?
