The Montreal Canadiens face the Carolina Hurricanes tonight as they try to snap out of the funk that has them in a four game losing skid.
Montreal is sliding in the Eastern Conference standings, barely holding on to a playoff spot at the moment. Their 3-6-1 record in the past ten games has dropped them into a wildcard slot and in danger of falling out of the playoff picture for the first time all season.
The Habs hit rock bottom in their last game, a 5-0 loss to the Washington Capitals. The Canadiens were heavily outplayed by the struggling Capitals, being outshot 26-4 at one point in the game.
The Hurricanes on the other hand are playing their best hockey of the season. They have had their ups and downs on the season, but are currently third in the Metropolitan Division thanks to a four game winning streak.
They have been led offensively by Eric Staal once again this season, who has 44 points in 49 games. Anton Khudobin has been playing lights out in goal for Carolina. He currently has a record of 11-3-0 to go with a 2.18 goals against average and .928 save percentage.
The last time these two teams met was on New Year’s Eve. The Canadiens held a commanding lead but blew it in the third period, and ended up losing in overtime. Max Pacioretty scored a pair of goals to put the Habs ahead 3-0 heading into the third, but it wasn’t enough as they allowed four in a row and were lucky to tie the game late and send it to overtime.
