The Montreal Canadiens have already scouted the Colorado Avalanche a couple times this season and that’s not including the first of two meetings earlier this month.
Just one Eastern NHL team scouting the Avs-Panthers game tonight…And that team is the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs have really been scouting the Avs heavily this season, despite only having one more game with them this season. Do they want those two points that bad? Or are they scouting Avs players for a possible trade pitch? I think it’s the latter. Names they are looking at? Probably Paul Stastny at No. 1, followed by John Mitchell at No. 2.

What could the Canadiens be looking to give up if they are indeed interested in one of Paul Stastny or John Mitchell?
The Colorado Avalanche are looking for defense, preferably a top four defenseman to play with Erik Johnson. The Canadiens don’t really have much to move on the back end at this point maybe Raphael Diaz? could Josh Gorges potentially be available if Stastny is in the deal. Although Josh Gorges is part of the core of this club and has a limited no trade clause in his current contract.
The Avalanche may go a bit younger and ask for a Jarred Tinordi, Nathan Beaulieu or maybe even a Greg Pateryn or Magnus Nygren, but that would not fit there need of a top 4 defenseman that can handle big minutes.
At this point Montreal has some pretty good depth on defense but unless they are getting a significant improvement on forward I don’t think any of those young defensemen will be including in a deal. Also the Canadiens would have to move out one their forwards if one is coming back the other way.
