A report surfaced through RDS today, suggesting that Simon Gagne is waiting to hear from the Montreal Canadiens on whether they are interested in him joining the Canadiens this season.
It would be difficult to believe that Marc Bergevin has any interest in bringing the veteran winger to Montreal. Gagne was an excellent player in his prime, but his best years are far behind him. At 33 years of age, Gagne is highly unlikely to set any career highs in the future.
Gagne is a Quebec native, and has played with Daniel Briere for the past five seasons, but the pluses in bringing him to Montreal end there.
Injuries and age have worn Gagne down to a shadow of his former self. The four time thirty goal scorer, finished last season with just five goals and 16 points in 38 games. He also notched just 17 points in 34 games during the 2011-12 season.
Though he is a speedy winger who is a sound defensive player, the Canadiens already have Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher penciled in as third line wingers, meaning there is simply no place to put Gagne.
Unfortunately for Gagne, this story makes it seem like his agent is just trying to remind teams that Gagne is still out there looking for an NHL contract.
