Montreal Canadiens first round pick Michael McCarron will have an opportunity play on a line with elite talent next season. During an interview on TSN Radio 690 this morning, London Knights General Manager Mark Hunter said the Knights brass have already penciled in a line of Max Domi, Bo Horvat and McCarron to begin the OHL season.
Domi and Horvat, were also first round picks in the recent NHL draft. Horvat was selected 9th overall by the Vancouver Canucks, and Domi went to the Phoenix Coyotes at 12th. The pair are very skilled forwards, and have a new bodyguard in town with McCarron riding shotgun on the top line.
Domi and Horvat were key members of a Knights squad that won the OHL Championship this past season, and represented their league at the Memorial Cup Tournament. Domi led London with 87 points in the regular season and 32 postseason points. Horvat chipped in 61 points in the regular season before steeping up with some clutch goals, and notching 23 points in 21 playoff games.
The Knights have won consecutive OHL Championships, and are scheduled to host the 2013 Memorial Cup, meaning they are guaranteed a third straight berth in the Canadian Hockey League’s signature event. Aside from the three aforementioned first round picks, London also boasts a pair of defenders selected in the first round in Nikita Zadorov and Olli Maatta.
McCarron, all 6’5 and 240 pounds of him, ran the risk of being labeled a third line grinder and fighter when he decided to join the Knights, who are run by former NHL pugilist Dale Hunter and his brother Mark.
However, Mark noted in his interview, they are excited about McCarron’s hands and hockey sense, and will give him every opportunity to develop his offensive skills, playing on the team’s best line.
