PK Subban, Pugilist

Feb 11, 2012; Toronto, ON, Canada; Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Mike Brown (18) goes after Montreal Canadiens defenseman PK Subban (76) as the referee gets between them at the Air Canada Centre. The Canadiens beat the Maple Leafs 5-0. Mandatory Credit: Tom Szczerbowski-US PRESSWIRE

Of the stupid, nonsense memes that surround P.K. Subban, none is more prevalent than that he doesn’t fight to back up his actions.

To which the obvious answer should be, “He’s a number one defenseman, he’s not going to take himself out of the game for 5 minutes to satisfy your primitive urges.”

But since this meme seems to have legs I’ve taken it upon myself to find out how often a defenseman fights and whether Subban is notably shirking his knuckle-dragging responsibilities.

Would you look at that, tied for 20. On a good fraction of the teams in the league he’d be the top fighting defenseman. For defenseman whose team actual relies heavily on, he’s in the top group in the league for fights, not far from Gleason’s 5. But Subban isn’t just relied upon, he’s his team’s number one guy, plays in all situations. How does he compare to players like that?

So by top defenseman standards, Subban fights a lot. Second in the league. Both guys tied or ahead of him are also a lot bigger than Subban’s 6’0″.

But maybe this was just a matter of him getting a couple fights in this year but its typically a suck? Well he’s only played for 2 seasons, but what if we compare him to his peers over that time?

Well how about that. Turns out top defensemen don’t fight very frequently and that Subban fights as much as anyone of his caliber. A guy like Shea Weber who hits tons of people hasn’t fought a single opponent in two years of regular season play. By the standard Pernel Karl is held to he’s a massive pussy that hides behind his teammates.

The difference is that the other top 20 D-Men talk a lot less trash than Subban. People are just asking him to fight when his mouth asks for it.

    • Stephan Cooper

Point is that’s not going to happen and he’d be a fool to do so. Defensemen don’t fight much unless they are third pairing types. Their team can’t afford to have them out of the game.

I could also talk about the inherent immaturity in grown men responding to trash talk with wanting to fight but that seems to be a minority opinion.

      • Steven P

It just goes to show how easily instigated their players are if they get their panties in a bunch over talk. He gets in their head and people can’t handle it.

He’s a great d-man and people just don’t want to accept that a young successful kid is going to be putting their team out of the playoffs for years to come, and he’ll do it with a smile and a Habs crest for the rest of his career. We hit a home run and people just can’t stand it because their aging Chara won’t be able to stop PK from the LTIR while we hoist a few more cups. He runs his mouth off because guess what it works and it will work again.

Agree 200%. This reminds me of the Richards/Subban drama. And Richard saying PK was a young guy who didn’t earn the respect of the veterans and blah blah blah. Then you look at Richards’ past which is full of dirty hits and even more the fact that it was just his 2nd full season in the league. Does that make him a veteran NHL player?

Also, I can’t remember correctly if it was Richards who said Subban was dividing the Habs locker room in an interview or something like that. Sure PK is not an angel but if I recall, HE didn’t get traded for this exact reason! Richards did.

    • Roke

Shea Weber punched a guy and then shoved the guy’s head into the glass e yet he hasn’t fought once in the last two years. Even if Subban’s reciting Chaucer while playing the game why is talking “asking for it” to a greater degree than blatant dirty play?

  • john a.

seems he is a pugilist with management too.Thats what i thought the story was when i say the byline

  • Habflex

How many fights does Pronger get into? PK talks with his mouth but Peonger talks with his stick. The dirtiest player in the league.

  • Hermindepal Iftakar

Wow, talk about the misuse of statistics…..The bottom lineis, Pk has a big mouth, acts like an ass, and does a great deal of stupid things on teh ice. When you act like that, you need to back it up, other wise you are a chump. When I saw him fight Marchant I realized he was a chump, that was the lamest fight I have ever seen, and Marchant is 25 lbs lighter than PK. You cant have it both ways, if you dont or cant put up the fists, dont be a jackass on teh ice. It’s not the Canadian way.

    • Steven P

Please elaborate. How is it a misuse of facts, and don’t say being a deluded Bruins kool aid drinker counts. Your butt buddy Chara doesn’t seem to look favorable on this list but he’s a damn ogre. PK isn’t an ogre dude, he isn’t a chump like Marchand either, he doesn’t have anyone to hide behind he just doesn’t fight all the time because he’s a #1 defenseman. What excuse does your boyfriend Chara have? Also in case you were too dense to pick up on this the fight between Marchand and Subban was lame because it was a staged fight, they didn’t want to hurt each other because they’re friends off the ice. Maybe instead of letting your jealousy and blind rage cloud your judgment, you should judge PK because of how good a hockey player he is, while he still fights amongst the top d-men in the league, plays an agitator role and basically does it all. I’m not blind to the fact that Lucic is an amazing player I would love to have as is Chara, but suck it up kid. Is the American way to live in denial and not accept facts? Because it sure seems like it.

      • Hermindepal Iftakar

Excellent arguement, everyone must be a Chara loving butt buddy if they dont like that PK is an ass on teh ice and doesnt back his mouth up. Nice to see you are so socially entrenched in PK’s relationships to know all about his friendships and when they will stage fights. It’s a misuse of facts because PK got fighting majors for being grabbed and falling to the ground. He didnt fight, but the numbers are being used to reflect wehat a killer he is in relation to top efencemen. PK has skills, but he is too much of a classles chump wiht his antics. It’s even caused grief in the locker room and on the ice when people like hal Gill have to rush to his aid to prevent his chicklets from being knocked out of his mouth. That’s straight up from news interviews, not the tight social relationship you havewith him. I would expect someone who has their finger ont eh pulse of PK;s life to remember those interviews. Swagger is a polite name for being an ass.

        • http://twitter.com/MikyDood Miky B

You seem very knowledgeable of his behavior but you probably haven’t watched even more than 10 Habs games the past season, so who are you to judge?

Can I ask for which team you are cheering for? Because I would very much like to point out all of your team’s dirty players and one-time incidents that made me write down ‘dirty’ on his forehead. Because yeah, it’s the game, every single team has its own instigators.

I will be the first one to say Subban is not a saint but, what you are making up in that comment sounds like you got a personal grudge against him.

Honestly I don’t care if you disagree, but the point is that you are exaggerating when putting all the blame on him. And really, the media? Everybody knows the media exaggerate everything to make a top story and add drama to a rather boring season when there were but injuries to talk about.

As for the interviews, he’s never said anything wrong, for the simple fact that if there is one guy (I know it may sound weird for another team’s fans) that always says the right things when there is an interview, it’s Subban. Again I know it might sound weird from another team’s fan perspective, but the guy is an ace of talking to the camera.

What you are referring to are probably the little skirmishes he got into with his teammates (at many times, yes I have to admit) that happened to be filmed by the media, and once again those events got overblown by the medias like it’s become usual in Montreal. Stuff like that happen all the time, even in other teams, but since in Montreal, well you know haow were are crazy hockey maniacs here, it makes the top headline first page every time.

Uh, so anyways, sorry for this book of a comment but I think you are wrong with the picture you’ve made yourself of one of the most talented and promising young players in the league.

P.S. About this: “PK got fighting majors for being grabbed and falling to the ground.”

Now it’s clear in my mind, not only have you not watched 10 Habs games last season; you have not watched a ‘single’ Habs game.

You should go ahead and ‘youtube’ a couple videos to get your facts straight.

Have a nice day sir! ;-)

If you think I misused a stat point out how or be silent. I’m all for criticisms of methodology but back up your statements.
