"Rose: Do you love him, Loretta? Loretta: Ma, I love him awful. Rose: Oh, God, that’s too bad."

The movie Moonstruck is a film starring Cher as Loretta and Nicholas Cage as Ronny.

Loretta fell in love with Ronny Cammareri.  Ronny was the younger brother of Johnny Cammareri,  Cher’s fiancee. Ronny – as pointed out by many characters in the film, had many flaws that  made Loretta’s entire family attempt in vain to dissuade Loretta from marrying him. Ronny was much younger than her, he was missing a hand, he had a violent temper and he had a job that was headed nowhere.

"Geoffrey Molson : Do you love him, Bob ? Bob Gainey : I love him awful. Geoffrey : Oh, God, that’s too bad."

Bob Gainey is no longer the G.M of the Montreal Canadiens yet the feeling in Montreal is that the Club de Hockey remains Gainey’s team. When Gainey stepped down and handed the reigns to Pierre  Gauthier, a meeting was probably held between The Molson Brothers and Gainey where an exchange such as the one above, probably happened.

Bob Gainey loves Carey Price…the Molsons love Bob Gainey and this leaves the Molsons two choices… stop Gainey from seeing his love interest and risk losing him forever or –  believe in their ‘child Gainey’ and hope that he sees something in Price that no one else does.

It’s a dilemma that every parent encounters at least once in their  lifetime. Reverse pychology dictates that if the parents love the ‘bad boy or girfriend’ then their son/daughter will not love them but if the parents openly despise the ‘unwanted one’ , the more the kid will want him.

Carey Price is the boy that makes fathers cringe when they see him sitting on the couch, his hand on their daughter’s knee. They want to grab the guy and throw him into the street along with their discarded beer cans yet just when their patience runs out – Price does something that makes them love him and they see something deep inside that gives them hope and regains their confidence. They see their daughters smile when he enters the room yet they also see their daughters crying on their beds after tossing the phone into the wall.

Price is young enough to be stupid and allow for any detractors to despise him for making and showing an immature side. He is also young enough to learn from his mistakes and build on any situations that arise and parlay them into a responsible, positive career. A young man who does not sow his wild oats risks a midlife crisis paralleling that of a young child in a ice cream factory, an overindulgence whose repercussions are far worse than the tomfooleries of a twenty-one year old. Tiger Woods is a perfect example of that.

Carey Price turns twenty-three years of age today and he shares a birthday with Anita Gillette who played Mona in the movie Moonstruck. Gillette went on from being a regular on games shows such as The 20,000 Dollar Pyramid and  Match Game to supporting roles on Law and Order and CSI – a supporting player in championship shows…

Gainey has seen a lot in his career, on and off the ice. His own daughter – Laura (https://awinninghabit.com/2010/07/26/bob-gainey-the-last-true-hero/), succumbed to the foolishness of youth and was lost to her own stupidities for a while yet Gainey knew the daughter that lived within the drug infested girl that presented hersef before him.

In the Paparazzi influenced world in which we live, it is easy to forget that these athletes are kids and it is not their fault they possess the talent to obtain a salary far removed from reality. A world where Porsches replace rusted Honda Civics as cars of youth.

Gainey sees the same thing in Price that he saw in his daughter – for some reason, I don’t think Carey will let Mr. Gainey down.

Happy Birthday Carey.
